Ferrocarriles de Sarriá y Cataluña was a privately operated narrow-gauge railway running between Barcelona and the Sarrià and Vallès districts. During the Civil War, when the Republican government's monetary system fractured and small copper and bronze coins vanished from circulation almost immediately after July 1936, hundreds of Catalan municipalities, companies, and cooperatives began issuing their own emergency fractional pieces. This railway's cardboard token is one of those local substitutes — a transit operator effectively printing its own petty currency to keep change flowing at ticket windows.
These are catalogued within the vast *Allepuz* corpus of Spanish Civil War local issues. The 30 × 30 mm square format and brown card stock are consistent with other transport-sector emissions from Barcelona during this period.
