Arenys de Mar is a coastal town north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coin circulation collapsed after 1936. The Ateneu Arenyenc — a cultural and recreational society, not a bank or municipal authority — was one of the more unusual issuers even by the chaotic standards of the period. Civil associations, cooperatives, and worker collectives all printed their own notes in these years, tolerated by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a stopgap.
The Albertí-Llach census (AL#281) records this type as genuinely scarce.
