Alcolea de Cinca is a small municipality in the Huesca province of Aragon, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally issued emergency scrip during the Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage left ordinary commerce nearly impossible. The Cooperativa Única — a single collective entity combining agricultural and consumer functions — issued these notes to keep day-to-day transactions moving within the village economy. Acceptance beyond the immediate community would have been essentially zero.
