Aigüestoses del Llobregat — a small municipality in the Berguedà comarca — issued these cardboard emergency pieces during the Civil War as the Republican zone collapsed into a chronic shortage of metallic small change. The central government had effectively lost control of fractional currency supply, and hundreds of Catalan municipalities responded by printing their own. Cardboard was the practical answer when metal went to the war effort.
At 36mm, this is an unusually large format for a 10-céntim piece, suggesting the issuing authority prioritized durability and legibility over economy of materials.
