Costa Rica's brass coinage of this period replaced earlier cupro-nickel issues as global metal supplies and pricing shifted dramatically in the aftermath of World War I. The 10 céntimos denomination circulated heavily through the early republic's market economy, and brass survivors in any condition above Fine are genuinely scarce — the alloy wore quickly and the coins were used hard.
