Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Ceres, personifying the Republic, set between a radiant sunbeam to the left and an olive branch to the right, traditional symbols of the French Republic. A single star appears above the effigy. The engraver's signature L.MERLEY and the date 1881 appear in the exergue beneath the bust. The legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by a star. The portrait is rendered in a finely detailed neoclassical style characteristic of Merley's work.
