Obverse description Left-facing laureate bust of Marianne, personification of the French Republic, rendered in high relief with flowing, elaborately detailed hair adorned with a laurel wreath. At the base of the bust, crossed fasces and other republican emblems are depicted, symbolising authority and unity. The legend REPUBLIQUE to the left and FRANÇAISE to the right arcs around the portrait along the rim. The engraver's name DANTZELL appears in small lettering at the lower centre of the field. The design is finely engraved in a classical Neoclassical style characteristic of French Republican coinage proposals of 1848.
