Additional information

Ham is a small commune in the Somme department whose commercial center was effectively erased by the First World War — German forces demolished much of the town during their 1917 withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line. This token was issued five years later as local merchants struggled to maintain small-change circulation during France's chronic postwar bronze and copper shortage, a problem that plagued provincial commerce well into the mid-1920s and spawned hundreds of similar chambres de commerce and union commerciale issues across northern France.
