| Obverse description | Central design features the allegorical figure of the Genius of Liberty, depicted as a standing winged male figure facing right, inscribing the date 1870 upon a fasces-mounted tablet. The figure is rendered in a neoclassical style engraved by Albert Désiré Barre. The circumferential legend reads LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ LA PATRIE EN DANGER, distributed around the periphery of the field. The exergue bears the engraver's signature BARRE. This is a uniface obverse trial strike (épreuve uniface d'avers) produced during the Government of National Defense period. |
