Fort du Murier was one of several French internment depots operating under the broader POW administrative system during the First World War. Like most French camp issues, this 10 centimes note functioned as canteen currency — prisoners could not legally hold French francs, so internal scrip allowed controlled access to goods within the depot without the security risk of circulating national money.
Orange paper was a deliberate choice, not an aesthetic one: colored stock made counterfeiting harder and forgeries immediately visible to guards. Camp scrip on plain white paper had already caused problems at other French facilities earlier in the war.
