| Obverse description | Left-facing laureate bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, set within a beaded inner border. The effigy is rendered in low relief, consistent with cardboard essai production techniques. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE arcs around the upper periphery, flanked by a small star, with the engraver's signature L.MERLEY and the date 1888 appearing in the lower field beneath the bust. |

Essais en carton — trial pieces struck on cardboard blanks — were produced by the Monnaie de Paris as a low-cost method of evaluating proposed designs before committing to metal dies and full production runs. Merley's second type for this denomination never advanced beyond the trial stage, leaving these cardboard strikes as the only physical record of a design the French treasury ultimately rejected.
