Additional information

The 1848 French essais emerge from one of the most compressed political moments in the country's numismatic history — the February Revolution had toppled Louis-Philippe, and the provisional government needed coinage for a republic that was barely weeks old. Rogat was among several artists invited to submit competing designs, producing trial pieces that would be evaluated before any production dies were committed. Most essais from this competition exist in tiny quantities; piéforts, struck at double or greater thickness to test die pressure and detail resolution, are rarer still.

Fewer than a handful of piéfort examples from Rogat's submission are documented across major collections.
