Obverse description Left-facing bust of Marianne, the allegorical embodiment of the French Republic, rendered in the Art Nouveau style by engraver Daniel Dupuis. Her hair is elaborately dressed with a wreath of oak and laurel leaves, and she wears a flowing drapery. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE arcs around the periphery, with REPUBLIQUE to the left and FRANCAISE to the right. The engraver's signature DUPUIS appears incuse in the lower field beneath the bust. The portrait is executed with fine sculptural relief characteristic of the epreuve (pattern) strike.
