Obverse description Right-facing draped and cuirassed bust of Louis XIII, depicted in anachronistic homage, wearing a crown and a milled collar. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine classical detailing typical of mid-19th-century French medallic art. The legend ESSAI MONÉTAIRE appears in the field, identifying the piece as a monetary trial strike. The portrait conveys regal authority consistent with the historical iconography of the Bourbon monarch.

Reverse description Central field bears the date 1839 enclosed within a wreath of oak branches adorned with acorns, tied at the base. A variant of this essai exists in which the date is replaced by the inscription PRESSE MONÉTAIRE in the central area, documenting the mechanical capability of the monetary press. The wreath is finely executed in the classical tradition of French coinage design. No additional legend surrounds the wreath on the reverse.
