French municipal and commercial chambers issued emergency aluminum token coinage from 1914 onward as the wartime government requisitioned bronze and copper for munitions, draining conventional small change from circulation almost entirely. Marseille's chamber was among the more prolific issuers, producing multiple denominations across several years to keep retail commerce functional in a port city handling enormous volumes of military supply traffic.
The El Monnaies reference 10.2 distinguishes this from at least one other die variety in the series.
