Wartime metal shortages forced French Algeria's commercial institutions to issue their own emergency coinage when the central government could not supply sufficient small change. The Algiers Chamber of Commerce produced these zinc pieces across a three-year window as a purely local stopgap — accepted within the city's commerce but carrying no authority beyond it. Zinc was the only practical option; copper and nickel had been swallowed by the war effort.
