Haiti's 1906 coinage was produced during a period of acute political instability — the country went through seven presidents between 1902 and 1915, several removed by coup or mob violence. Coins were struck abroad, as Haiti maintained no domestic mint, with this issue produced in France. The copper-nickel alloy adopted for small denominations in this period was a deliberate modernizing move, replacing the earlier bronze issues that had circulated in badly worn condition for decades.
