Additional information

This type spans the Dreyfus Affair, the First World War, and the postwar inflation that ultimately killed bronze coinage in France — yet the coin itself changed almost nothing across those 24 years. Production was interrupted between 1899 and 1916, when the type effectively disappeared from circulation, a gap that makes certain dates within the series far scarcer than the broad date range implies. The 1916–1921 reissue was driven by wartime small-change shortages, not any monetary reform.

The GEM references distinguish at least four die varieties, primarily affecting the positioning of the cornucopia and the engraver's signature detail beneath the figure.
