| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing bust of José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and period military attire. The engraver's initials 'HP' appear in small incuse letters at the base of the truncation. The peripheral legend 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' curves around the upper field, while the name 'ARTIGAS' flanked by raised dots is inscribed below the bust, with the date '1960' beneath in the lower field. The portrait is modelled in the neoclassical style characteristic of Thomas Humphrey Paget's work. |
