Additional information

Somalia's 1967 coinage was issued just six years after independence from the joint Italian and British administration, during a period when the civilian government of President Aden Abdullah Osman Daar was giving way to the elected administration of Abdirashid Ali Shermarke. The republic's coinage program was modest by necessity — the economy remained heavily dependent on foreign aid, and these brass pieces were produced abroad rather than at any domestic facility.

The military coup of 1969, following Shermarke's assassination, rendered this entire civilian-era coinage series short-lived.
