Additional information

Cuba's 1870 pattern coinage emerged from the early years of the Ten Years' War, the first major uprising against Spanish colonial rule that began in 1868. Spain was simultaneously managing an insurrection on the island and a political crisis at home following the Bourbon dynasty's overthrow in 1868. Whether these patterns were produced speculatively in anticipation of an autonomous or independent Cuban monetary system, or as part of broader Spanish currency reform discussions, remains debated. The copper composition distinguishes this from related silver pattern strikes of the same year catalogued under the X series.
