Comments

Banco Nacional Ultramarino occupied an unusual position among colonial banks — chartered in Lisbon but operating as the note-issuing authority across Portuguese overseas territories simultaneously, meaning the same parent institution backstopped currency from Mozambique to Timor. This particular issue was almost certainly destined for one of those territories rather than metropolitan Portugal, where centavo-denominated BNU paper rarely circulated.

Bradbury Wilkinson's involvement was standard for colonial small-denomination work in this period. Their contracts with Portuguese colonial banking continued well past World War One.
