Additional information

Puerto Rico's 1896 coinage was authorized under Spanish rule just two years before the island's transfer to the United States following the Spanish-American War — making this among the final issues of Spanish colonial currency in the Western Hemisphere. The series was struck at the Madrid Mint and introduced a peso system unique to the island, distinct from the Cuban and Philippine issues of the same period.

When U.S. administration took effect in 1899, these coins were demonetized and exchanged at a rate of 60 cents per Puerto Rican peso — a deliberate devaluation that proved deeply contentious locally.
