The Banco Nacional de la República Argentina — not to be confused with the later Banco de la Nación Argentina founded in 1891 — operated during a period of chronic monetary instability, when provincial banks and the national institution issued competing paper simultaneously. The American Bank Note Company handled much of Argentina's security printing in this period, and the small-denomination centavo notes were produced in quantity for everyday retail use at a time when silver coinage had largely disappeared from circulation.
The Banco Nacional itself was liquidated in 1891 following the Baring Crisis, which collapsed Argentine credit and triggered a systemic banking panic. Notes from 1884 predate that collapse by seven years.
