Additional information

Vatican coinage issued in 2008 falls within the sede vacante period following Benedict XVI's election, but more relevantly, this year marked a complete redesign of the Vatican euro series — each denomination was assigned a different pope from history rather than carrying the reigning pontiff's portrait. The 2008 Vatican euro issues were struck in extremely limited quantities, as is standard for Vatican coinage, distributed primarily through the Ufficio Numismatico and unavailable through normal banking channels.
