Ghana's commemorative silver program has issued coins honoring European Renaissance figures with no particular connection to West Africa — a practice common among sovereign mints seeking bullion collector revenue rather than marking any domestic historical occasion. Da Vinci died in 1519, making 2019 the 500th anniversary of his death, which prompted a wave of issues from mints worldwide, Ghana's among them.
The Bank of Ghana outsourced production to a European facility; the coins never circulated domestically.
