Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square perforation, read in the traditional manner: top to bottom and right to left. The character 咸 (Xian) appears above the hole, 豐 (Feng) below, 重 (Zhong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together forming the reign-period inscription 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao), meaning 'Xianfeng [Emperor's] heavy currency.' The characters are boldly raised in relief against a flat inner field, with a plain raised rim encircling the outer edge of the coin.
