| Obverse description | Cast round coin with a central square hole. Four Chinese regular-script (kaishu) ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation, read in the traditional sequence top-to-bottom and right-to-left, forming the reign title and denomination legend 同治重寶 (Tongzhi Zhongbao). The characters are bold and slightly raised within a broad, flat field bounded by an inner rim encircling the square hole and an outer raised rim. The calligraphy is typical of late Qing imperial Board of Works issues. |
