Obverse description Large cast brass cash coin featuring a central square hole (穿) surrounded by a raised inner rim and outer rim. The four-character reign title inscription 天啓通寶 (Tianqi Tongbao) is arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in regular script (楷書). The characters are boldly rendered in relief against a flat field, with 天 (Tian) at the top, 通 (Tong) at the bottom, 啓 (Qi) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left. The broad, flat flan is typical of the larger-denomination ten-cash issues of the Tianqi reign period.
