| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square boss, with four large Chinese characters disposed in the four cardinal fields and read clockwise from the top: 崇寧通寶 (Chongning Tongbao). The inscription is rendered in the elegant Slender Gold (Shoujin) calligraphic style, attributed to Emperor Huizong himself, characterized by attenuated, sharply angular strokes with pronounced hook terminals. The characters are set within the broad flat field between the central boss and the plain raised rim, with no additional decorative elements. The overall composition is typical of Northern Song cast cash of large denomination. |
