Obverse description Predominantly green note with a fine guilloche underprint supporting a large lion's head vignette rendered in intaglio at left centre, a camel in the centre field, and a coffee harvester at right. The issuing authority inscription in Amharic and English runs across the top centre, with the denomination given in both scripts and flanked by numeral counters at lower left and lower right. An embedded vertical security thread is positioned left of centre, and a circular optically variable device (OVD) is affixed at right.

Reverse description Green guilloche underprint frames a central vignette of four figures — two couples — standing in a gesture of unity, rendered with intaglio detail against the patterned ground. A traditional Ethiopian woven basket (mesob) appears at right, also worked in intaglio. Denomination numerals and Amharic lettering are repeated at the top and lower left, with guilloche rosette panels anchoring the corners of the composition.

Ethiopia's 2020 banknote series was the country's first complete redesign in over two decades, introduced under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed partly as a practical measure against contraband hoarding — large quantities of the old birr had been stockpiled illegally across the border in Eritrea and Somalia, and the sudden demonetization gave holders just three months to exchange notes through the banking system. G+D's Leipzig facility, which has produced Ethiopian currency across multiple political regimes, retained the contract.
