Additional information

Pedro IV's tenure as king of Portugal lasted just two months in 1826 before he abdicated in favor of his daughter Maria, making any coinage issued under his name a compressed and administratively chaotic affair. The Diu mint — a tiny outpost on a peninsula off the Gujarat coast — continued striking copper-based colonial issues well into the following reign, with attribution sometimes lagging the political reality in Lisbon by months.

The nickel-zinc composition here is unusual for Portuguese Indian colonial issues of this period, which leaned heavily on copper and its alloys.
