Reverse description The reverse displays a large Cross of the Order of Christ occupying the majority of the coin's field, its splayed arms nearly reaching the beaded border. The cross is rendered in bold, deeply cast relief with chamfered terminals characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage of this period. The four digits of the date are distributed one at each corner between the arms of the cross, reading 1-7-7-7. The design is plain and unadorned, with no additional legend or device.
