The Baltic Islands Dollar is a local currency used on the Åland Islands, issued not by a central bank but by a regional civic initiative. The 2007 polymer series was among the earlier adoptions of Guardian substrate outside mainstream central banking — most local and complementary currency schemes of that period still used paper stock.

Åland's unusual constitutional autonomy from Finland, including its own postal system and distinct regional governance, gave the scheme a degree of institutional credibility rare for sub-national currencies.
