| Additional information |
Issued to mark the Rajamangala ceremony of 1988, in which Rama IX — King Bhumibol Adulyadej — completed his 42nd year of reign, surpassing every previous Thai monarch's time on the throne. The milestone was calculated according to traditional Thai astrological reckoning, where a full cycle of seven twelve-year periods carries particular dynastic significance.
The bi-metallic format was relatively new to Thai commemorative coinage at this date, borrowed from contemporary European practice rather than any indigenous minting tradition.
