Issued to mark the centenary of Siriraj Hospital, founded in 1888 by Rama V after the death of his son Prince Siriraj Kasiyabhorn, who died of dysentery at age one. The hospital became the nucleus of Thailand's first medical school, established under royal patronage as the country worked to build a Western-trained medical profession largely independent of foreign missionaries who had dominated healthcare infrastructure until then.
