Obverse description Conjoined busts of three Thai monarchs in left-facing profile occupy the central field: King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), and King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), the latter distinguished by his characteristic spectacles. Each figure is depicted in formal military or royal dress. Thai script legends identifying each monarch appear along the left and right periphery of the field, with abbreviated royal titles flanking the busts at the lower portion of the coin.

Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of Chulalongkorn University's founding institution, Chulalongkorn University traces its origins to the Royal Pages School established by Rama V in 1902, with full university status granted in 1917 — making it Thailand's first university. The commemorative program under Rama IX was prolific, and this nickel issue sits in a long run of similar crown-sized pieces produced through the late 1980s for state anniversaries. Nickel was the consistent choice for mid-tier commemoratives of this period, gold and silver editions reserved for issues deemed of higher ceremonial rank.
