Queen Sirikit was born on August 12, 1932, and her 60th birthday in 1992 carried unusual political weight — the date coincided with a period of acute instability in Thailand following the Black May crisis, when military crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters left dozens dead and briefly forced King Bhumibol into a visible mediating role. The commemorative issue proceeded regardless, as royal birthday coins are among the few certainties in Thai minting regardless of political conditions.
