Madagascar issued a series of gold wildlife coins in the late 1980s as part of a broader conservation-themed program targeting foreign collectors and investor markets — hard currency generation during a period when the country was operating under IMF structural adjustment conditions following its socialist-era economic collapse. These pieces saw negligible domestic circulation and were effectively export commodities from the moment of minting.
KM#16 is among the smaller-denomination outputs of that program, with the ibis selected partly due to Madagascar's status as one of the last refuges for several endemic waterbird species found nowhere else.
