| Reverse description | Central design features the bold numeral '10' set within a finely engine-turned square panel of horizontal and vertical line engraving, creating a striking contrast between the incuse background and the raised denomination. The Hebrew legend מ' שנים לישראל (40 Years to Israel) arcs along the upper field, commemorating the state's 40th anniversary. The denomination אגורות (Agorot) appears at the left and the transliteration AGOROT at the right, flanking the central motif. The Hebrew calendar year התשמ״ח is inscribed along the lower field. |

Piedfort coins — struck at double the standard planchet thickness — originated as a French minting practice used for presentation pieces and official gifts, adopted widely by European mints in the modern era for anniversary and proof sets. Israel's 40th anniversary in 1988 marked the first occasion the Bank of Israel issued piedforts as part of a coordinated commemorative program. The added mass relative to the circulation 10 Agorot makes the weight differential immediately apparent in hand.
