Israel's early decimal coinage was introduced in 1960 when the lira system replaced the mil-based pound, requiring an entirely new coin series at short notice. The aluminium bronze alloy chosen for this denomination was a deliberate departure from the cupro-nickel used elsewhere in the set, selected partly for cost and partly to produce a visually distinct color in circulation. Production ran across seventeen years with relatively few die changes, making variety attribution within KM#26 a minor but active area among collectors of Israeli material.
