This coin marks the final year of the Heisei era, issued to commemorate Emperor Akihito's abdication on April 30, 2019 — the first voluntary imperial abdication in Japan in over two centuries. The legal mechanism to allow it required a one-off special act of parliament passed in 2017, as Japan's Imperial House Law contains no standing provision for abdication.
Mintages for commemorative gold issues from the Japan Mint at this weight tier are tightly controlled and sell out through official allocation channels almost immediately upon release.
