This piece was struck to honor Andrés Avelino Cáceres, the general who led guerrilla resistance against Chilean forces during the War of the Pacific occupation of Peru's central highlands from 1881 to 1884. His campaigns through the Andes against a better-equipped army earned him the nickname "El Brujo" — the sorcerer — among both his own troops and the Chileans who couldn't pin him down. The irony of this commemorative is the timing: 1982 was the year Peru's economy began its slide into the inflationary spiral that would eventually make 10,000 soles a nearly worthless unit of account.
