Indonesia's 1964 high-denomination issues arrived during the final, chaotic stretch of Guided Democracy, when Sukarno's government was financing ambitious state projects and military commitments through the printing press rather than taxation. Inflation was already severe; by 1965 it would become catastrophic. Notes like this one were part of the flood of currency that ultimately forced the 1965 monetary reform and a new rupiah series under the New Order.

Percetakan Kebayoran, the state printer in South Jakarta, handled the full run domestically — unusual for a country that had previously relied on foreign security printers for its more complex issues.
