| Obverse description | The obverse features the Russian State Emblem — a double-headed eagle displayed — rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. A circular legend around the periphery reads ДЕСЯТЬ ТЫСЯЧ РУБЛЕЙ (Ten Thousand Roubles) at the top and БАНК РОССИИ (Bank of Russia) at the bottom, all in Cyrillic. Additional inscriptions in the lower field note the fineness and weight: Au 999 and 1 кг, along with the serial number designation № 000. The date 2009 г. appears prominently in the lower field, and the Moscow Mint monogram (ММД) is present at the lower left of the eagle. The design is executed in the classic style reserved for Russian commemorative bullion coinage of the highest denomination. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly detailed panoramic composition celebrating the historic city of Velikiy Novgorod and its environs, rendered in high relief against a polished proof field. At upper left, Viking-style longships sail across a stylized waterway, referencing the city's Varangian trade heritage, while the crenellated walls and towers of the Novgorod Kremlin dominate the central background. In the foreground, multiple architectural monuments are depicted, including the domed Cathedral of St. Sophia and other medieval churches, alongside a genre scene of figures in traditional dress at right. Ancient Novgorodian coins are shown at lower left, underscoring the city's numismatic and mercantile history. The curved legend ВЕЛИКИЙ НОВГОРОД И ОКРЕСТНОСТИ (Velikiy Novgorod and Suburbs) arcs along the upper periphery, and the inscription ЯРОСЛАВОВО ДВОРИЩЕ (Yaroslav's Courtyard) appears at the base of the design. |
