| Additional information |
This piece belongs to Russia's "Churches and Monasteries" gold series, issued by the Bank of Russia to commemorate Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture following the Soviet-era suppression of religious institutions. The Church of the Transfiguration on Kizhi Island — built in 1714 without a single nail according to persistent local tradition, though historians debate the extent of that claim — is among the most photographed wooden structures in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Mintage for this denomination was extremely limited, as is typical for the Bank of Russia's large-format kilo gold issues of the early 2000s. The 100mm planchet was produced at the Moscow Mint.
