Sokol's 2007 polymer note is a factory scrip issue — internal currency produced by the Nizhny Novgorod aircraft plant, which has manufactured MiG fighters since the Soviet period. Corporate scrip of this kind experienced a revival across Russian industrial enterprises during and after the wage arrears crisis of the 1990s, when cash-strapped state-linked firms paid workers in tokens or notes redeemable only at company stores. By 2007 that crisis had technically passed, making this a late and unusual survival of the practice.
The polymer substrate is the notable detail — most Russian industrial scrip of the post-Soviet decades was printed on ordinary paper.
