The "light panel" designation distinguishes this note from the otherwise identical earlier printing: the underprint background on the face was noticeably thinned, a change introduced by Harrison & Sons during the 1972–73 production run. Whether this was a deliberate security decision or a technical adjustment during the press run is not documented in the official record, which has made the two varieties a persistent point of disagreement among collectors.

At 10,000 Rials, this was the highest denomination in Iranian circulation at the time of issue — a position it would hold until the revolutionary period upended the entire currency structure.
