Obverse description Four facing busts of the Spanish royal family arranged within four interlocking circular frames occupying the central field: the conjoined facing busts of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia appear in the upper frame, with the date split 19-89 to either side; the effigies of the two Infantas are portrayed in the lower-left and lower-right frames, while the bust of Prince Felipe appears in the lowermost frame. A royal crown surmounts the composition at top. The circular legend reads JVAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPANA, separated by stylised rosette stops, around the entire periphery within a beaded border.

Additional information

This issue is one entry in a long-running series celebrating Spain's autonomous communities, a constitutional structure established by the 1978 Constitution that devolved significant powers to seventeen regions — a deliberate dismantling of the centralized Francoist state. The series ran through the 1980s and into the 1990s, with each year's coin dedicated to a different community.

At 168.75 grams of sterling silver, these were never intended for circulation. Collector pieces from the outset, sold through official channels at a premium over melt.
