Turkmenistan's paper currency during this period was issued under Saparmurat Niyazov's presidency — a government that tightly controlled all imagery and symbolism on its banknotes. De La Rue held the printing contract throughout the manat's first incarnation, before the 2009 redenomination wiped out five zeros and replaced the entire series.
The 10,000 manat was among the highest denominations in circulation before redenomination, a direct consequence of inflation inherited from the Soviet collapse. At the 2009 conversion rate, it exchanged for exactly one new manat.
